Life Methamorphosis

This new edition of EU Green Week (21-25 may) focused on theme "Green cities for a greener future", wants to explore ways in which the UE is helping cities to become better places to live and work. Showcasing policy developments on air quality, noise, nature and biodiversity, waste and water management, it promotes participatory approaches to urban development, networking schemes, and tools for sharing best practices, engaging local authorities and citizens, and encouraging them to share their vision of a sustainable future. 

The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona has wanted to join to the initiative and is organising a guided tour to Ecopark 2 in Montcada i Reixac, where the UMBRELLA prototype is working, for the next 23rd of May of 2018.

The UMBRELLA prototype allows to reduce more than 70%, compared to conventional treatments, the energy used to treat water from the organic fraction treatment of Ecopark 2. This optimization is possible by using innovative anaerobic and autotrophic processes applied in series: the anaerobic membrane reactor (AnMBR) and the autotrophic nitrogen elimination system Anammox ELAN®. Moreover, the biogas produced is transformed into biomethane that can be used in municipal vehicles and waste collection trucks.

The proposal, which has been very well received by the European Commission, has been chosen to take part of #EUGreenWeek partner events.
