Smart Green Gas: generation of biofuel from wastewater

News

Aqualia develops a biofuel generation project for vehicles with methane from the El Portal wastewater treatment plant in Jerez.

The Smart Green Gas project is an initiative led by Aqualia with the participation of a consortium formed by Gas Natural Fenosa, EDP-Naturgas Energía, Biogas fuel cell, Diagnostiqa, Dimasa Grupo and Ecobiogas, as well as public research organizations and universities. For the project they have the funding of the CIEN program of the Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI).

The main objective of Smart Green Gas is to study the possibility of generating high quality biomethane, with a 95% concentration, from waste to be injected into the gas network or used as fuel for the automotive industry. The developed system also allows to reduce the costs in the treatment of methane to be used in a motor vehicle.

The scenario chosen by Aqualia was the El Portal sewage plant in Jerez. In it, a "biogas station" has been installed, where the two vehicles loaned by SEAT will refuel, which foresees to cover 30,000 km over a year.
