Second edition of the high-level meetings "Energy Prospectives"

Christopher Jones: "To comply with the Paris Agreement, the EU will have to be practically free of carbon emissions in 2050"

The Naturgy Foundation and the IESE Business School organized the second edition of the high-level meetings "Energy Prospectives". It is a cycle of talks about the economic, technical and scientific conditions that are glimpsed for the future of the energy sector, developed by national and international experts and aimed at a small group of business experts, managers and academics.

On this occasion, the promoter of the EU 20-20-20 agenda, Christopher Jones, stressed that to meet the objectives of Paris in the European Union, all sectors (electricity, transport, buildings and industry) will have to be total or almost totally carbon-free by 2050. In this line, Spain proposes as objectives to reach 42% of renewable energies and 39.6% of improvements related to energy efficiency. Ambitious milestones that require a well-defined plan.

According to Jones, the energy model of the future must be a hybrid between electricity with renewable and decarbonised gas, which includes biomethane, green hydrogen and renewable gas. This model, according to the expert, will be cheaper than one that is only electrified. In this sense, the challenge of the European Commission will be to create a model to ensure that different types of energy can compete at the same level to meet any demand.
